Can technology save tradition? (IM Nowruz)

“Can technology save tradition?” Is the universal question Afshin Javadi asks in his short film titled "IM Nowruz" (IM as in instant message), and it applies to any culture and ethnicity. The filmmaker has released a shorter version of his 16 minute film to meet the length requirement of Farhang Film festival, the film's first competition. A longer version will be released soon for future festivals.

Although only 9 minutes in length, "IM Nowruz" is filled with symbolism that requires several viewing of this film in order to fully appreciate the intricacies of this riveting story. The Iranian/American writer/director has masterfully covered many topics, such as, the ball and chain of tradition, cultural alienation, technological displacement, human sexuality, etc. The film successfully delves into the lives of four Iranian-American cousins and their struggle to gather in LA for Nowruz, the Persian new year and the Spring equinox celebration. Unfortunately physical and emotional distances between them turn the planned gathering into a huge challenge.

The talented cast include Navid Negahban (Homeland, 24, The stoning of Soraya M.), Naz Deravian (Weeds, NCIS, Jag, Daybreak), Nicholas Guilak (CSI: Miami, 24, Jag, Saving Jessica Lynch) and the gifted American actor, Stephen Tobolowsky (Memento, Groundhog Day, Mississippi Burring, Glee). "IM Nowruz" is a dogma film and has been shot primarily on Apple tablets, such as iPad 2, iPhone 4 & iPhone 4S.
