Iran's Chess Grand Master Defeats Russian World Champion

Iranian Chess grandmaster Ehsan Qaem Maqami has managed to snatch a victory over the former World Champion Anatoly Karpov from Russia. The 26-year-old Iranian athlete checkmated Karpov in 85 moves in his second encounter on Wednesday. Earlier, the Russian grandmaster won Qaem Maqami in 42 moves in the first game on Tuesday.

The 57-year-old Anatoly Yevgenyevich Karpov was the undisputed World Champion from 1975 to 1985, and repeated his World Championship title from 1993 to 1999.

The two chess masters are planned to play 20 rounds from January 27 to February 2, 2009.
