Persepolis Wins Iran's League Title

Persepolis wins Iran's Premier League Champion's Cup after six years, defeating Sepahan with Sepehr Heidari's goal in the 95th minute. Saturday's match in Tehran's Azadi stadium gave the title to Persepolis on the last day of the league as the team needed just a victory while its opponent, Sepahan wanted only one point.

Mohsen Khalili scored the Reds' first goal in the 17th minute with a sharp kick outside the penalty box before the eyes of over 100,000 fans. Twelve minutes later, Ehsan Haj Safi from Sepahan put the ball into Persepolis net as Hossein Kazemi sent a nice pass in front of the goal.

With seven minutes extra time for the second half, the Reds put pressure on Sepahan more with four strikers and in the fifth minute of the extra time, with defender Sepehr Heidari's goal, the Reds' wish come true.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) reduced six points from Persepolis during the 2007-08 season, but the 2-1 victory over Sepahan topped the Reds with 59 points. Sepahan stood second with 58 points.

This was Afshin Ghotbi's first championship as well as his first year as head coach of Persepolis.
