Iran’s water polo team has clinched a victory against Kazakhstan at the FINA Men’s Water Polo Olympic Games Qualifiers in Romania. In its first win of the tournament, Iran edged out Kazakhstan 7-4 with Amir Hossein Khani, star of the match, scoring three goals. Ali-Reza Shahidpour, Iran’s goalkeeper, was also one of the top contenders in the team.

While it looks like Iran will not qualify for the Olympics, the team can finish as high as 7th. According to competition rules, the top four squads will join China, the United States, Hungary, Spain, Serbia, Australia, and Montenegro at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

Germany and Greece already qualified for the Olympic Games after becoming the top two teams in their respective groups in the tournament.
