Ali Mazaheri of Iran won the heavyweight title decider to claim the last Beijing berth at the Asia Olympic Qualifying tournament this week. Mazaheri beat Jasur Matchanov of Uzbekistan on points, meaning nine different countries shared the 19 Olympic places on offer in the tournament which ended Saturday.
Uzbekistan was the most successful nation of the tournament, with four boxers qualifying for Beijing. Thailand, South Korea and China won three places each, Tajikistan earned two, while there was one each for Kazakhstan, India, Japan and Iran.
Ali Mazaheri competed in the 2006 Asian Games in the Heavyweight (-91 kg) division and won the gold medal in the final bout against Uzbekistan's Jasur Matchanov 25-19. He is also 2007 Asian champion.
