Former Portugal, Switzerland and Cameroon coach Artur Jorge has been named as the new coach of Iran, according to reports. The 61-year-old Portuguese coach is expected to fly to Tehran in the next few days to finalise contract details. The former Porto and Benfica player was eventually chosen over Frenchman Jaques Santini and German Peter Neururer.
The former Portugal international, who won the 1987 European Cup and Intercontinental Cup with Porto, led Switzerland during Euro 96 where they were eliminated at the group phase. However, he failed to lead Portugal to the 1998 World Cup in France. His most noteable achievement, however, was the European Champions Cup triumph with Porto in 1987 when FC Bayern Munich were downed 2-1 in the final in Vienna. ran were grouped with Syria, UAE and Kuwait in AFC World Cup qualification.
