Korea Republic got their revenge for last competition's quarterfinal defeat to Iran, holding Team Melli to a goalless draw over 120 minutes before advancing to the semifinal stage thanks to a 4-2 win in the shootout. Iran has not won the AFC Asian Cup title in 31 years.

In the penalties, Iran had placed in a substitute goalkeeper, and they still had a chance to win. But missed opportunities by Mahdavikia and Khatibi allowed the Korea Republic to face Iraq in the semi-finals.
